Kino Kuvakukko has been offering cinematic experiences in Kuopio since the 1930s. Although the world has changed significantly over the decades, a few things have remained the same: the magic of cinema continues to captivate, charm, and bring joy.

Approximately 75% of the films shown at Kino Kuvakukko are high-quality European productions, and the cinema is part of the Europa Cinemas network. Kino Kuvakukko can be described as a nostalgic art house cinema that warmly welcomes film lovers of all ages. In addition to its first-rate programme, Kuvakukko hosts film clubs, festivals, screenings from the National Audiovisual Institute’s archive series, and special showings for school groups.

Beyond Kuopio city centre, films are also enjoyed in Nilsiä. Manttu in Nilsiä serves as a cinema on weekends, as well as a concert venue, theatre, and a versatile space for various events. This historic building has been used for film screenings by the City of Kuopio since 2015.

Kino Kuvakukko and Kino Manttu are cinemas operated by the City of Kuopio. Both venues are substance-free environments.

Movies are presented in original languages, without replacing the original audio with a translated soundtrack!

How to get to Kuvakukko?

In front of and near Kino Kuvakukko (Vuorikatu 27), there is a limited amount of paid on-street parking. We recommend arriving by public transport, by bicycle, or using the Toriparkki car park. The distance from the Market Square to Kino Kuvakukko is about 250 metres. There is also a dedicated bicycle storage area nearby on Vuorikatu.

Kino Kuvakukko has two entrance doors, and you can use either one to enter and exit. The doors open about half an hour before the film starts and, for practical reasons, are closed as soon as the screening begins. Please make sure you arrive on time.

Venue hire

Kino Kuvakukko – an atmospheric, versatile and affordable venue for public events in the heart of Kuopio.
Kuopio’s largest cinema auditorium, with 330 seats, is available for hire for both private and public events.

AV Equipment:

  • Christie CP4415-RGB, 4K projector
  • Philips FP6 35mm film projectors
  • Digital Dolby Surround EXE 6.1 sound system

The hire fee includes the auditorium, all in-house equipment (including PA system and microphone), and the services of a technical staff member. One technician will be present to operate the equipment. The organiser is responsible for audience supervision and any necessary permits related to public events. Use of the lobby and kitchen area is included at no extra cost. Chairs and tables in the lobby can be rearranged as needed.

The hire fee does not include any potential film rental costs or other expenses agreed with third parties. Kino Kuvakukko is not available for commercial film screenings.
